Dali is one of the most popular spots for independent China travellers. It used to have once the reputation being a second Kathmandu. It is only 30 minutes by plane or 6 hours by bus from. The scenic landscape, and rich Bai Culture help draw people to enjoy a great getaway from the big Kunming. Dali was the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms. The Tang emperors never conquered the Nanzhou empire but the Mongols subdued it in the 13th century.

You won't be able to see everything in a weekend though... so if you have more time it would be well worth it for you to stay three or more days and visit all the tourist sites and relax.

Highlights are the Three Pagoda Temple (San Ta Si) on the west shore of the Lake Erhai, four kilometers outside the northwest gate of Dali. The view of the lake, the three towers (70 metres and 43 metres tall) and the mountains behind are famous.
